PURGE INSURGENCY is an independent rock band led by songwriter CHRIS MASTROVITO of Ventura County, California. With eclectic influences spanning punk, alternative, classic and indie rock, yet dissatisfied with the usual confines of those singular genres, the music endeavors to explore all the points of the sonic spectrum within them. Chemistry being extremely important to capture the passion of his home recordings in a live setting, Mastrovito (guitar, vocals) has reunited with longtime friend NICK GASSAWAY, original drummer of their early 2000's punk band SCHISMISM, and enlisted the bass guitar and backing vocal talents of brother ALEX MASTROVITO to complete the 3-piece lineup. When Schismism was no more somewhere around 2004, Mastrovito stewed in his own creative juices, gradually writing music in a totally different direction in an attempt to return to the melodic songwriting roots of early adolescence that had been partially muffled by his involvement in Oxnard's punk scene. "Lying Wide" was the first track written around 2005, but it wasn't until late 2010, newly inspired by the local scene through his role as a local music columnist, that the recording project came to fruition with the songs "Slave Syncopated" "L.E.D." and "Taking a Pulse" for the project that would be called Purge Insurgency. The songs of Purge Insurgency, although relatively varied in tone and style, can be generally described within the amorphous "indie rock" and "alternative rock" genres and are influenced by hundreds of bands including Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Pavement, the Pixies, Generation X, Weezer, Bad Religion, The New Pornographers, Wilco.... Lyrical themes span from advancing technology to dream states and subjective reality to substance issues and other dilemmas of the modern era.
