Melissa was born and raised in Thomasville, Ga. Her love for music came early when she was exposed to her father's diverse record collection. It included everything from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Cream and The Beatles to Blondie, Rod Stewart, Boston and George Carlin's "7 Words You Can Never Say on Television." Although she sang in the school chorus as a child, she was always too shy and lacked the confidence to really pursue performing on any other level, but that all changed just last year when she met a band called the 'Wailin Wolves' at an open mic. Guitarist Bert Calderon was instantly smitten with Ms. Wood's vocal ability and asked her to join the band. She did so briefly, but then returned to Miami, which had been her home for the past ten years. Now she is back in South Georgia/North Florida and rocking with The Bruised Grass Band and working on a solo project as well. In addition to being an outstanding vocalist, Melissa writes her own songs and is also learning to play guitar. Her musical influences now range from Etta James, Joss Stone, Linda Rondstadt and Cat Power to good ole' Southern Rock she heard growing up and of course, the Blues. An Air Force Veteran, Melissa (along with Bruised Grass) is proud to support vetsrock.org, an organization whose mission is to raise awareness and assist in providing for the needs of our vets.
