In the 1980's many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa experienced a serious economic crisis unprecedented in the history of the continent. Slow overall growth, sluggish agricultural performance coupled with rapid rates of population increase contributed to economic paralyses, which caused many to flee the continent to go seek a better life elsewhere.
