Bio:
Dené Theron is a musician and composer from South Africa who has been in love with music since an early age. With a solid classical upbringing, she studied piano, clarinet and music theory at school level and was a member of the prestigious Kimberley Choir. She took up the saxophone in later years and this is another instrument which she would like to study further. After receiving an Advanced Diploma in Sound Engineering in Cape Town in 2004, she was involved in various musical endeavours, from composing music for theatre pieces to short films. Her first album In My Room was a trip-hop album produced by Dené on her home studio. This album inspired multimedia performances which frequented the Cape Town underground Electronic Music Scene in 2005. That same year Dené worked as a Jazz Vocalist and as a lyricist and vocalist for House band The Resonance. Dené had been teaching herself to play the guitar and writing songs since her student years and when Dené left Cape Town in 2006, her passions extended into other realms as her musical creativity became more focused on her guitar playing and songwriting. Dené claims “it all happened in 2009”, when after spending a year in her home town of Kimberley, South Africa, where she honed her acoustic sets with regular performances, a big following and fan base in Kimberley and a small tour to Namibia lead to her recording her first studio album “1000 Cups Of Tea”. In 2009 Dené also wrote the music/sound design for Theatre Production Son Of The Wind (in association with the South African San Institute and the Northern Cape Department of Sports, Arts and Culture) which toured South Africa in 2010. Dené has since then toured with Son Of The Wind as Sound Engineer. She now lives in Amsterdam where she is writing new material and gigging. She plans on releasing a new album later this year.
