Bio:
The name 'warning birds' is one that has followed songwriter Sam Carmody around since his early years at high school. It was a code that thirteen year old friends had given to birds that circled overhead while they learnt to surf, teenage imaginations deciding that the small birds were trying to warn them of sharks. The warning birds flew above the surface of the water, reading below it.

The title, it seems, is a suitable one for a band that has recently had their own cover blown.

2011 was an impressive first year for the young Perth four piece. Announcing themselves with a solid performance at the 2011 WAMi Festival, Warning Birds went on to take out the Western Australian Music Industry Association’s Rock Song of the Year Award. They supported a host of national touring acts throughout the year and in October released their first music video. Warning Birds were also added to rotation on Triple J Unearthed’s digital radio and rounded out 2011 performing at the inaugural Life’s a Beach Music Festival.

Triple J Radio’s Zan Rowe has said of Warning Birds that theirs is “full, heartfelt music”. Their performances are emphatic and energetic, and their music is complex and intelligent.

Beginning as a solo project for songwriter Sam Carmody, and performing throughout 2011 under the moniker ‘Sam Carmody and The Warning Birds’, Carmody with singer/bassist Carmen Pepper, guitarist Bensen Thomas and drummer Tim Bates begin the new year dropping the syllable count on their name and galvanising under one title: Warning Birds.
