Hailing from the vibrant suburb of Protea South in Soweto, Johannesburg, a youthful, versatile, and talented hip hop and R&B group is preparing to take the South African music industry by storm. Going by the name G.S, which stands for ‘Guesskuat’, the group raps in a mix of English and vernacular, sharing stories from Ekasi and providing an eclectic mix of hip hop and R&B sounds. GS is currently busy in the studio polishing up tracks that are destined to give established muso’s in the industry a run for their money. With June 16th just round the corner, the group has written and prepared a track dubbed ‘African Anthem’ which pays tribute to the African continent and laments the historic events that took place in South Africa on that ill-fated day in 1976. The tune is catchy and boasts lyrics that are deep in meaning, delivering a very powerful message. Guesskuat was founded in 2002 by Rulane (Focus) Bakane, who is the Executive Director of Striving Mind Productions and a Music Producer in his own right. The groups first project was conducted in 2005 by Striving Mind’s co-director, Lungisile (Reyzarekshin) Mhlanga & ‘Bongani (Pido) Majola, alongside other members of the group. They released a single called ‘Ghetto Havoc’ which was a hit in the Southside of Gauteng, and went further to release a Mixtape called ‘Force Army’. Despite these succeses, the group, however, split in 2007/2008. In 2009 “Focus” re-assembled the group & GS/Southside was born again. The group worked with Focus to produce a Mixtape called ‘Street Hustling Part 1’ which is available for free and can be downloaded from this link: http://www.mediafire.com/#wdz8ttb77vi5i,1 The groups single, “WANA WANA” was accepted by a UK radio station and made it to the station’s Hip-hop charts. The group was also the runner up in a competition held at the University of Pretoria. Recently, they were amongst the few, out of thousands of submissions from around the world, chosen for airplay consideration on "The Radio Cafe ReverbNation Indie Music Countdown". Christopher Ewing, Host of "The Radio Cafe ReverbNation Indie Music Countdown commented that GS/Southside was chosen as it was viewed as one of the BEST independent artists in the industry at the moment.
