Formed by renowned poet Royal Kent and ASCAP Award-winning composer Wendy Loomis, COPUS is a spoken word jazz ensemble that presents conscious lyrics blended with riveting music. The current band includes bassist Patrick Mahon, drummer Levon Washington, poet/spoken word artist Royal Kent, and composer/pianist Wendy Loomis.
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, COPUS has released numerous CDs and videos, has been on the Grammy ballot three times, and has earned nominations and awards from Clouzine International Magazine and the Hollywood Music and Media Awards.
Additionally, COPUS produces live “Poet & Composer Salons” and podcasts featuring interviews and performances by fellow independent artists.
Most recently, COPUS premiered piece “What if We?” at the World Bank and Forest Trends in Washington DC; this piece about sea level rise was composed by Wendy Loomis with poetics by Royal Kent in conjunction with scientists from The ClimateMusic Project.
