Inspired by David Bowie's androgyny, the darkwave sound of Joy Division and the industrial edge of NIИ, Garda forms in 2009. Literally taking their name from "Guardians of the Peace," the national police force of Ireland, the group’s 2010 debut revealed a band that was subversive, sexy, stylish and showing no fear. Initially catering to Upstate New York's nightclub scene, the band's subsequent live shows were met with underground dance club success right from the start.
Composed of multi-instrumentalists Chris Miller, Eric Szymanski, Ken Devlin and drummer Rändy Käus, Garda focuses their signature sound around a dark dynamic. But from the beginning, they were simply an alt-rock group that got very ambitious. Not that Garda set out to prove anything; they are simply and sincerely in it for the music and always have been.
In 2012, Garda releases the most imaginative EP of the year. In recording "Republic," the band wields bone crushing guitars, tank-like drums and all the samples, loops and studio tricks at their disposal. However else the music of Garda may be described, it is quintessentially genuine. The integrated expression and dynamic interaction of four creatively charged artists makes for some of the most dramatic music on either side of the Atlantic.
One of Garda's greatest strengths has always been a consistently high standard in stage presentation. Put aside the usual pigeonholes; things like style and genre classifications. It takes much more for a band to make a personal connection with people. Garda understands this. The group's live shows continue to wow audiences with more lights, smoke and video than any other four piece alliance in the region.
Garda is a band that generates excitement, provoking even the most jaded rock addict into intoxication. They kindle the kind of passion that's missing in today's music. Through it all, the band has retained their eccentric, colorful image... complete with an almost casual musical dexterity that has won over hardened cynics and faultfinding critics alike.
