Years back, during one of Vancouver’s rare rain storms, drummer Jen Foster shared a beer with Rene Botha; accomplished vocalist, song writer & guitar player. One beer turned to a few, and the conversation veered from 80′s musical heroes to loved 90′s cartoon series and back. Years passed, and both individuals played their way through the Vancouver scene in a variety of different bands. While the 2 ladies had become good friends still sharing the same tastes, their paths failed to cross on a musical level again.
Then, fatefully, Rene was offered an acoustic set and remembered the drummer whom she shared a beer with those many years ago. She extended the invitation and they played to a sold-out crowd with enthusiastic, thunderous applause. Months later they snatched up Calgary-native Jessie Robertson the moment she stepped onto Vancouver soil, eager for her soulful bass to add meat to their developing body of sound. And thus, Low Spin was born.
Since 2009, Low Spin has quickly become a local favorite. They’ve caught the attention of producer Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, Mother Mother, The New Pornographers) and Tegan Quin (Tegan & Sara) among others. Redekopp joined them in the studio to produce their self-titled EP. This recording showcases Low Spin’s flexibility, shifting effortlessly from introspective, haunting songs to infectious, upbeat dance numbers which has often been described as alternative dark-pop. It features “Give Chase”, an unreleased Tegan and Sara tune, given new life with Tegan’s heartfelt blessing.
In 2011 the band ventured outside of their beloved Vancouver on numerous occasions to spread the word, performing with some of today's greats including being hand-picked by the UK's The Joy Formidable for their West Coast tour dates.
Recently experimenting with an array of sounds, instruments as well as other talented musicians since their inception, 2012 brings a wave of excitement to the 3 friends who are hard at work incorporating new ideas and technical changes to their already acclaimed sound and live performance.
