The son of a truck driver and a music teacher, Garrett Thornton is a singer-songwriter based in south Mississippi. His debut solo release is titled “Salt of the Earth”, a reference to the people and the stories of his birthplace. Having a very rural setting, the characters in these stories are very connected to the land and the things it provides, or in some cases, does not provide. That theme reverberates through the entire album. It serves as a backdrop for stories of love, loss, joy, and fate. The album was recorded at his home during the winter months of 2010-2011 and is stylistically a folk album. The instrumentation of the album is predominately acoustic and the tone sincere. It is a collection of short, understated songs intended to draw their emotional impact from their simplicity. To support the album Garrett will be planning a solo-acoustic tour in the late summer and early fall of 2011. He has also been recording a follow-up e.p. expected to be released sometime in the summer of 2011.
