Bio:
Brian Russell Cook is a mid-western multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who works mostly from a foundation that is based in American Roots Music. Roots music can mean many different things, and Brian enjoys the freedom of being able to move through the many styles that fall under the umbrella that is the roots. Brian’s 2010 debut album Mood Swings is appropriately titled. It touches on elements of the blues, country, gospel, soul, surf guitar, and rock and roll while maintaining a unique identity that unifies the many moods on the album. Brian spent the early part of his career (1995-2006) focusing on playing blues. Growing up in northern Indiana, Chicago blues was a major influence on his musical development. His early career consisted of over ten years playing the bass on the blues circuit. During this time Brian was honored to back up such blues heavyweights as Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Lazy Lester, Sam Lay, Junior Watson, RJ Mischo, and the list goes on and on. From 2006 to 2010, Brian played with the acoustic roots music group Goldmine Pickers. During this time he absorbed the styles of bluegrass, folk, Irish music, and old-time, and he played on two releases by the band, Lonesome Gone (2007) and Goldmine Pickers Live (2009). He also contributed bass tracks to Trent Wagler and Jay Lapp's Adrienna Valentine (2008) and b.b. wolfe's Heart Worn Sleeve (2008) during these years. Brian’s current musical pursuits are a culmination of his previous experiences combined with his own vision and creative energy. He is now not only playing the bass, but also writing songs and playing various other instruments. His first album showcases the fact that he is a multi-dimensional musician who can write, arrange, and produce an eclectic mix of songs.
