P. Lawton prefers not to be viewed as just a rapper. He boldly states: "I'm a writer who happens to rap". Born Jerry Medcalf, he was raised throughout various housing projects in downtown St. Louis and began writing when his 2nd grade teacher noticed his gift. Pac-Man (as his peers refer to him) initially had no intentions of persuing rap professionally. He gained a local following by hitting open mic venues, and attended 5 high schools ensured him supporters in every crowd he rocked. The newfound popularity and popular demand finally led him to start recording, but shady offers and dealings with labels made him reluctant to sign.
