Born Jessica Aquia Birago Opong, Contessa Birago's musical journey began at the age of 7. "My first musical memories were with my dad in the car. He was very liberal--I don't think that he thought much of me listening to Millie Jackson and James Brown, she recalls. It was great musicians like that that encouraged me to want more, and to make something of my own." She began to idolize those great muscians, particularly soul singers like Minnie Riperton and Sam Cooke. As her vocal ability progressed, she went on to sing in several venues around New York City including The Underscore, and The Iguana, located in the heart of the theatre district. In 2002, she continued her journey at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating in 2006 with a Professional Music Degree. She is currently writing songs, and constantly working on new material for upcoming projects.
