Bio:: If you ask the average musician these days what made them want to get involved in making music, most answers would vary. Many artists’ motives are centered around fortune and fame, and others’ are rooted in a deeper quest to change the world and art as we know it. For Matt Kee, the purpose for musical expression is much more simple. “Music is the only thing that makes sense in this world. So why wouldn’t I?” Like most dedicated and great musicians, music is a part of Matt as a person. It defines his character and shapes who he is. It’s for this reason that Matt feels he has no choice but to make music and continue to do so for as long as he can breathe. Although you might find his album filed under the Soul/R&B category, his eclectic influences help him redefine what the genre should sound like. When asked to describe his sound, Matt describes it as “a perfect blend between Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake.” The album starts out with a driving funk track that captures the listener’s attention instantly and boasts hints of classic Marvin Gaye and Robin Thicke inclinations. With songs such as “Over You” and “Can’t Stop”, Matt displays his roots based in the traditional Soul sound. Other songs like “Guilty Pleasures” and “All the things” provide a more contemporary perspective of his R&B background. With variety being a strong focal point of the album, songs such as “Tennessee cool off” and “Hey now” reach out to a wider pop audience in search of catchy melodies and addictive tunes that stick in your head. Matt Kee also repeatedly states his love for rock alternative music. Therefore, naturally, the album ends of on a highly energetic note with songs like “You could be the one” and “You said your goodbyes” that incorporate hints and elements of rock music. Overall, the album combines all of these elements to showcase a surprisingly cohesive project that stands to challenge the direction of what Soul and R&B should take in the future. As a child, he grew up listening to the music that his father played around the house, which included Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Later on in High School, his tastes developed into more contemporary styles and groups such as Boyz II Men and Jodeci began to shape his artistic persona. After high school, Matt became more exposed to rock and rock alternative bands like Radiohead, Keane and Bon Jovi. From there his musical influences started to round themselves out. It’s from this wide array of influences that Matt draws inspiration to create his own blend of Pop R&B. It’s the type of mixture that when described, may seem hard to imagine, but when experienced, is hard to imagine any other way. Most of the inspiration for the album was drawn from Matt’s own life experiences and observations. “A lot of the album has to do with love. Relationships are wonderful whether it’s with your soul mate or your mother. So why not draw inspiration from it.” Even with a seemingly banal and clichéd topic such as love, Matt finds fresh ways to depict various points of view within the range of the subject. Many of the themes among the album span through new love, dysfunctional love, lasting love and sexuality. “My music is for people of all ages. [From] The 13 year old girl who is falling in love for the first time, to the 50 year old woman who is falling in love for the second time.” It stands to reason that even with a timeless subject like love, artists must strive to find new and creative ways to present their perspectives on the matter. And with a track list that covers topics from one end of the spectrum to the other, it also stands to reason that Matt Kee’s music does just that. For Matt Kee, his diversity and ability to seamlessly blend and flow between genres is an ability that only a limited amount of artists seem to have. Blending rich and thick background harmonies with a strong, higher range baritone voice allows his vocal timbre to sit well among different genres. To see Matt Kee live is also not what you might expect from a typical Pop/R&B show. Merging many hard rock elements with the Soul/Pop/R&B feel of the album provides an energy and atmosphere to make even the most detached audience member stand up and pay attention. Matt began his journey with music at a young age. As a teen, he would stay late after school and sneak into the music room to play the piano. When the school custodian discovered Matt in the music room after school hours he immediately reported him to the principal. However instead of reprimanding Matt for trespassing outside of school hours, she made him play for her and encouraged him not to give up on his talent. In high school, he joined the school choir and soon after formed a Boy band named, Mary’s Grand, with a few fellow members. Matt continued to perform and write with the group while studying in the University of Calgary Jazz choir program as a unclassified student. Shortly after his group disbanded and Matt decided to attempt a solo campaign as a singer. When asked what he would like to see in the future of the music industry Matt states that he hopes to see more variety come to the forefront. “There is so much talent in the world that has to be heard. The music industry is always evolving. Sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worse. We as consumers and artists just have to go along for the ride. I don’t know if I can change anything about it or if I would even want to. All I know is that I have to evolve with it.” With his music, Matt Kee hopes to inspire other artists in similar positions to strive to achieve their goals and aspirations. Having received much encouragement throughout his life to follow his dreams, he hopes to reciprocate that encouragement to his fans and listeners. If there was one thing that Matt would like to express to his listeners about his music, it would be the following. “Love it for what it is. Judge it for what it is. Music is an expression and should be able to bring emotions out. Listen to each message of each song. You never know - it may just change your life.”
